Work Overview

Semblance of Innocence in a Ruptured Dwelling is a chamber trio for clarinet, piano, and cello, written for Ensemble Liaison. The work explores expressions of innocence and related emotions through lyrical melodic themes and conventional harmonies. However, the work's opening section develops darker colours and a more foreboding mood, which anticipates an abrupt rupture that occurs in the centre of the composition. This unprepared collapse of the otherwise predominantly tonal language of the music confronts the listener with an intense and contemporary sound world that focuses on colour and texture, rather than melody and harmony. After this brief journey into the lesser-known depths of our desires and fears, the music gradually returns to feelings of innocence and joy. However, in context of the work's formal and emotional discontinuities, innocence can only be a semblance of itself: something we cherish as a memory and something we read with joy in the eyes of children.
