I wrote this piece just before I left to speak at a music conference "Composition in the 21st Century", at Trinity College, Dublin. I had been reading about modern Irish composers and listening to Celtic music. Sir Harrison Birtwistle was the keynote speaker at the conference, and I was reading a book about his music and this led me to move out of traditional song form. The piece also shares harmonies inspired by the struggle of the Catholics in Northern Ireland. I also feature a little birdsong motif to lighten the piece up.
Instrumentation: Soprano, piano.
Duration: 3 min.
Difficulty: Advanced — Includes modern harmonies.
