Points of departure II : for viola, violin, cello and piano

by Nigel Sabin (2011)

Work Overview

Points of Departure II is a reworking of material from Points of Departure (written for clarinet, violin, viola and piano in 1991). Only the second movement, Resting Point, remains unchanged, as a duo for viola and piano. In this version, the performers may choose to play the second movement as a duo for cello and piano.

The rest of the work is sufficiently new for it to be considered as a new work. Essentially, I have taken what I consider to be the best ideas from the original work and presented them and developed them in different directions. Textures have been thinned out and there is much more simplicity and clarity. I think that the benefit of a twenty year gap in the writing process has resulted in a stronger work than the original.

This version is scored for piano quartet but the viola tends to take the lead, as in the original version. The original piece was written for Perihelion Ensemble with violist Patricia Pollett and it is to her that I have dedicated this new version.
