Diver's Lament is fast throughout but has two main sections that are linked by a passage for four Peking Opera Gongs. The first section is an ebullient passage in which a calling figure for horns, percussion and keyboard instruments is alternated with rising modal phrases in the brass; the second and longer section unfolds from a series of rhythmically active hymn-like passages in the strings which evolve over slow bass harmonies with bass drum and gong pulses.
Instrumentation: Piccolo (doubling flute), 2 flutes, 2 oboes, cor anglais, 2 clarinets in B flat, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, 4 horns in F, 2 trumpets in D, 2 trumpets in C, 3 tenor trombones, bass trombone, tuba, percussion (3 players), timpani, harp, piano, strings.
Duration: 14 min.
Dedication note: In memory of Heinz Harant
