Work Overview

Virelai metamorphosis is an early orchestral work written in 1980 for the inaugural National Young Composers' Summer School in Sydney. The work is a set of free transformations of the medieval virelai, 'C'est la fin'.

Instrumentation: 2 flutes (2nd doubling piccolo), oboe, cor anglais, 2 clarinets in B & A (1st doubling clarinet in E flat & 2nd doubling bass clarinet), 2 bassoons (2nd doubling contrabassoon), 2 horns in F, 2 trumpets in B, 2 tenor trombones, bass trombone, percussion (2 players), piano, strings.
