Dedication note: Dedicated to Fretwork.

Commission note: Commissioned by the South Bank Centre for the Purcell Tercentenary.

Djilile is partly based on an adaptation of an Aboriginal melody collected in Arnhem Land in the late fifties by A.P. Elkin and Trevor Jones. The title means 'whistling-duck on a billabong'.
