Work Overview
Sculthorpe's second string quartet was composed while a student at the University of Melbourne's Conservatorium and was performed by fellow students on an all-Sculthorpe program presented by the Fine Arts Society in Melbourne on 3 August 1948.
Sculthorpe recalls it as "a brief, fairly rhythmic, rather bitonal' work, a single movement probably originally compiled using material from slightly earlier piano pieces.
