Work Overview

Campuhan Frog Song is a moody medium slow piece based on a harmonic progression and 4, 5, 3, 4 quaver subdivision played on piano in eight four meter. The double bass player 'hovers' throughout the piece on tonal centres played arco in semiquaver subdivisions. The drummer plays chromatic long tones for the melody section before switching to drums for the group improvisation (the glockenspiel is optional: the drummer could instead play in an atmospheric out of time fashion until the improvisation). The piece builds in intensity throughout the composed sections of the piece and 'breaks open' into a group improvisation where each player can freely choose the musical content. The ensemble finds a way to finish together.
