Work Overview

Not Everything but Enough is a piece based on melody and different types of interplay between the piano, double bass, and drums. It begins in a reflective fashion with a collective improvisation where the players are free to choose the content and density of the music. This leads to the composition which is set out in three sections. The first section is based around a lyrical repeated phrase played on the piano supported by a rapid ostinato played on the double bass, and a chiming ostinato played on the glockenspiel.
The second section features a harmonically expanding piano part, arco double bass, and atmospheric sounds played on the drums.
The third section is a return the first piano and double ostinato idea, but this time the drummer plays rhythmically and strongly synchronising with the double bass player. The pianist develops rhythmic variations as this part progresses (see additional figures score). There is a sudden halt of activity and return to quiet improvisation to finish.
