Work Overview

'Peculiar Orbit' is an energetic medium tempo swing (swung quavers) piece in 5/4 meter. The piano part is constructed contrapuntally: the left hand part is comprised of a four bar melodic phrase that repeats, and the melodic phrases played by the right hand follow a longer, more abstract rhythmic contour. The double bass part sounds in unison with the piano player's left hand, and the drummer plays in swing rhythm in 5/4 while accenting a 'back beat' accent on the snare drum every 4 beats to give the impression of a link to half time 4/4.
The second section of the piece utilises the rhythm of the initial bass melody phrase. This is modulated through a harmonic sequence. This harmony provides a foundation for improvisations by the pianist, and double bass player. A return to the A section brings the piece to a conclusion.
