Work Overview
'Time and Place' is constructed of seven short emphatic melody
phrases, to be played in unison by the trio. The piano player
indicates the start and stop of each phrase. Approximation of
unison timing is welcome. Improvisation begins once the seven
phrase cycle is completed twice. This section is 'open' or
'free.' The players can choose the melodic, harmonic, and
rhythmic content of their improvisation. The intention is to
maintain a sense of a group sound and expression while allowing
various trio members to be heard more prominently at different
times during the improvisation.
The seven phrase melody is played once more to finish the piece.
