Work Overview
The Agnus Dei is sung at the high point of the Mass, just before Communion. It is a meditation on Christ's sacrifice and a prayer for peace. It is remarkable for its repeated phrases: Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world. Have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world. Have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world. Grant us peace. For that reason, this musical setting also features repetition and a transition from an introspective mood, to one of joy and liberation and finally to one of peace.
