Score & Part
Fantasy : for viola and piano / Colin Spiers.
Library shelf no. 787.3/SPI 5 [Available for loan]
Work Overview
This large work is essentially a duo for viola and piano. While entitled "Fantasy," the structure is more a hybrid of fantasy and 1st-movement concerto forms, with the piano's opening cadenza fulfilling the function of an orchestral introduction. This is later balanced by the viola's lengthy cadenza. The work's two main thematic groups consist of a simple expressive motif accompanied by repeating chords, and a fast moto perpetuo scherzo, both of which are varied throughout the musical discourse.
