Work Overview

The first movement, Capriccio, begins as a imitation baroque concerto for high trumpet and strings, which the jazz trumpet interrupts with an offstage cadenza, and then attempts to join in. The movement contains another cadenza duel where the two soloists try to outdo each other in virtuosity. However, the movement ends with the jazz player showing he can play "straight" and the classical player shows he can "swing". The second movement, Blues, blends the two soloists styles in a mostly gentle manner somewhat reminiscent of Gershwin and Rachmaninoff. The final movement is a fast Tarantella, with the soloists playing together or in quick alternation. A quiet closing section leads to a brief coda.
