Work Overview

Clowns was composed in 1980 for soprano recorder, to amuse one of my young recorder students and introduce her to some extended instrumental techniques. I hope this transcription will do the same for flute players.

The first movement depicts clowns entering the circus arena, tentatively at first but soon chasing each other around at top speed. The second movement is a sequence of comedy sketches - in the 'meno mosso' section it sounds like they could be sneaking up on each other and hitting each other over the head.
