Work Details

Year: 2007, this version: 2010

Instrumentation: String orchestra.

Duration: 21 min.

Dedication note: Dedicated to Ken Tribe

"The arrangement for string orchestra of my third string quartet was titled Smith's Alchemy. In much the same way this arrangement of my fifth quartet is named Tribe's Desire. It was the express desire of Ken Tribe, who commissioned the quartet, to help create an expanding archive of chamber music by Australian composers. Throughout his life Ken has led by example and clearly hoped more patrons would emulate him in continuing to commission new works for chamber ensembles.
Ken's approach is a perfect model of communal goodwill, and an embodiment of the desire that every decent tribe displays to enrich its own welfare, as well as that of its neighbours. The music itself, a tight web of acoustic interactions, suggests to me a musical representation of exactly the kind of cooperation that is required for the success of every communal endeavour."

An arrangement for string orchestra of String Quartet No. 5.

Created at the request of choreographer Graeme Murphy to accompany his new work for Tasdance dance company.
