Work

The hooves of fate : for SSAATTBB choir with percussion

by Dan Walker (2015)

Work Overview

This large work is a setting of the second section of James McAuley's poem 'The Blue Horses'. The contrasts between the beautiful imagery and the unmasked vitriol in the text is reflected in the various sections of the music. Slow quiet sections butt up against faster, rhythmically driving material: the percussion suggesting the the incessant clamour of a factory production line or construction site. This piece presents several challenges for the performers, with many divisi within voice-parts and chromatic and often audacious harmonic progressions. It would suit a fine tertiary or semi-professional ensemble.
