Work Overview

This is a recomposition from the Suitte d'un Gout Etranger, composed by Marin Marais in 1717. It builds on his earlier work significantly and transforms his lively rhythmic dance-like tune for solo bass viol into a yearning, slow duet.

Instrumentation: Bb clarinet, cello.

Duration: 5 min.

Difficulty: Medium — Filigree and Baroque gestures in the clarinet part, with one microtone. Double stops and sustained drones in cello part.

The version was scored for Cello and Bb Clarinet on the occasion of the composer's inaugural 100clickWest Salon concert, for Jason Noble and Freya Schack-Arnott.

The version for cello and Bb clarinet has been transposed to D minor from the original E minor for ease of performance on the cello.
