Work Overview

Carte du Tendre was the code of courtly love in earlier times. "All he (the lover) knows is that what passes through his mind is marked, like the printout of a code". (R.Barthes, A Lover's Discourse, Noonday Press, pg.4)

The condensed sonnet form of 14 lines that appears (with some exceptions) in these poems became a starting point for the songs, whereby the text itself undergoes a very fragmentary treatment. Another influence for me was the sound of the 19th century street or barrel-organ, an instrument that was very widely heard at the time of Baudelaire. Some of the strings in the piano part are prepared in order to suggest the timbre and tuning of this older instrument.
