The idea of writing a dialogue for mechanical and live pianos, in which spatial and visual elements took on an equal meaning, occured to me whilst living in Australia. After moving to Cologne I discovered Juergen Hocker's player piano studio and saw the possibility of making my own piano roll. The work developed gradually during a period of experimentation with the noteroll machine and the mechanical AMPICO piano, that plays Nancarrow's works.
Graphic ideas and formations often suggested their own sounds. The part for player piano exisits in 2 forms - as a note roll and as a disc for Yamaha computer piano.
Instrumentation: Piano, mechanical player piano and operator/Yamaha disc piano. The mechanical piano part can be performed alternatively on a computer-controlled MIDI Yamaha Disc piano, or on electronic tape.
Duration: 10 min.
Difficulty: Advanced — Co-ordination between live pianist and mechanical piano
Influenced by Nancarrow's works for player piano.
