Work Overview
Sleep, Little Baby, Sleep is a setting of a text by English poet Christina Rossetti (1830-1894), written for the Feast of the Holy Innocents. The piece is a Lullaby Carol, intended as a cradle song of blessing and peace for the baby Jesus. Throughout the work, a steadily falling melodic line which repeats the opening phrase of the poem ("Sleep, little baby, sleep") is repeated within the inner voices. Around this cantus firmus the remaining voices quietly petition the sleep of the young child, while speaking of His safety during the night, protected by the love of God the Father. The soft comfort of sleep is juxtaposed with praise and adoration for the baby Jesus, the "Shepherd of the sheep." This Carol is suitable for performance at Christmas celebrations and worship services, until the end of the Christmastide season.
