A song cycle for Counter-Tenor and Gamba Consort, setting the poetry of Peter Henley. These songs are reflections of the life of Magister Ludi, the protagonist from Herman Hesse's Glass Bead Game (Das Glasperlenspiel) novel of 1943.
Instrumentation: Counter-tenor, viol consort (treble, alto, tenor, bass).
Duration: 16 min.
Contents note: Life ebbs from life -- The traveller's flute -- I have retreated.
Dedication note: The work and its premiere are dedicated to the memory of Malcolm McIvor, secretary of the British Music Society who sadly passed away in March 2006.
