Work Overview
HeartBroken Star In The Dream Winds Of Endless Night is
a short night fantasy for toy piano that evokes the landscape and
natural phenomena of Antarctica. Taking place in the context of a
dream, the toy pianist imagines himself dreaming of the Antarctic
landscape as they perform in the seeming endless night that is a
feature of the Antarctic winter.
The atmosphere in Antarctica is ideal for observing astronomical
phenomena and therefore the central image of this composition is
the imaginary "HeartBroken Star" which opens the piece. It is
represented by a single repeated tone which quickly fractures
into multiple lines of rhythm and pitch and progressively evokes
a vast landscape which includes allusions to ice and the
katabatic winds. The shining sentinel of the HeartBroken Star
constantly returns in the form of single repeated tones.
