Work Overview

The umbra, penumbra and antumbra are the names given to three distinct parts of a shadow, created by any light source. In the case of this piece the light source is the sun and the occluding body is planet Earth as observed from the moon. In the umbra sunlight is completely obscured by planet Earth. The penumbra is the region in which only a portion of sunlight is obscured by the occluding planet Earth. The antumbra is the region from which planet Earth appears entirely contained within the disc of the Sun.

Composed for solo vibraphone, Umbra-Penumbra-Antumbra is one complete movement in three distinct sections according to the three parts of shadow.
