Event Details
Experience the magic of Sydney Opera House’s Utzon Room as Australia Piano Quartet perform works by Mozart, Fauré and a completion of a two-part commission by Elliott Gyger reflecting on musical form. Mozart was the father of the piano quartet, and in his majestic K493 he combines the breadth and resonance of an orchestra with the fragility of each instrument as a soloist. Completing a two-part commission first performed at the Sydney Opera House in 2015, Elliott Gyger’s Shell Chambers II, reflects on musical form and structure in an intricate display of compositional mastery and instrumental technique. Bringing APQ’s 2016 season to a close, Faure’s sublime Piano Quartet in c minor is a favourite masterwork of the repertoire. Written in the final stages of his brief marriage to the soprano Pauline Viardot - a muse to Berlioz, Liszt, Saint-Saens and Chopin amongst others - this luscious romantic piano quartet draws inspiration from Brahms while vividly presenting its own impassioned French sensibility.
