Further Details

State Award Winner for Excellence in Music Education (APRA AMCOS Art Music Awards), Topology's Top Up program enriches the musical journey of thousands of young people, their teachers and communities around Australia each year. Top Up brings together professional and young musicians to explore and create new music. In addition to supporting teachers’ delivery of the Australian Curriculum, Topology offers composition workshops, instrumental lessons, performance opportunities and professional development for teachers.

Top Up Online is the same award-winning program - delivered virtually, and thus even more accessible to music makers and aspiring composers wherever they may be. It is open to composers and musicians of all levels of experience (student to professional), and music educators (and their students) of all kinds. Participants can avail of workshops as an individual, a classroom, or an ensemble/club, delivered by Topology's expert pool of instructors via Zoom.

Open to musicians, students, composers of any level of experience, individuals can avail of composition or instrumental workshops delivered by Topology's pool of Top Up instructors (see below). Workshops can range from one-off sessions to a series of workshops depending on your creative goals.

School groups, classrooms and teachers can avail of 2 kinds of workshop programs.

The Top Up Creative Program, unique to Topology, empowers young people to compose their own original music. Open to Primary – Secondary classrooms or groups, the program consists of composition, improvisation and songwriting lessons over a series of 4-7 group sessions conducted by Topology’s Education Program Manager, composer and founding member John Babbage. By the end of the program, the students will have composed a new piece of music together!

The Top Up Instrumental Program offers workshops that deliver on Australian Curriculum requirements (and more!) in the areas of performance and improvisation. In consultation with schools, Topology can deliver one-off to a series of workshops for individuals or groups of students. Programs can be tailored to suit the school’s requirements, and may consist of a focus on a particular instrument (eg strings workshops) or a combination of instruments based on our pool of instructors listed below.

NOTE: Programs can be tailored to suit individual school needs in terms of workshop content, scope and duration. Teachers are encouraged to discuss their options to get the most out of their program.

They can also be delivered in different modes: 1) One-on-One, where individual students engage in a lesson with Topology, or 2) Group Sessions, where groups of students and their teacher can join in remotely from their own homes or classrooms.

Topology has a diverse pool of instrumental educators to instruct and inspire your students, including (but not limited to):

  • John Babbage (composition, saxophone, band)
  • Robert Davidson (composition, bass)
  • Louise King (cello)
  • Toby Loveland (guitar, ukulele)
  • Christa Powell (violin)
  • Andrew Maddick (violin)
  • Bethan Lewis (viola)
  • Christian Gante (piano
  • Thomas Green (electronic/gaming music composer)
  • Andrew Johnson (bass, trumpet, music technology)

To find out a little bit more about our artists, you can have a read of their biographies on the Topology website.

Costs may vary depending on the length, scope, and number of sessions requested, but we are committed to making this program accessible to all. We also aim to provide continued employment opportunities for the artists in our pool of instructors, whose livelihoods have been greatly affected by the recent crisis. We will endeavour to strike a balance here, and encourage consultation with our team regarding concerns in this area.

Top Up is also supported by Tim Fairfax Family Foundation and Arts Queensland, affording subsidies (and in some cases extending no cost) to regional schools and communities in QLD and NT. Upon review of the EOIs, applicants will be notified on the subsidies they are eligible for.
