So ... you're a Year 7-12 student, you're a musician, a creative, a performer and stuck at home in lockdown.

At the Guild, we want to help you unlock your creativity and frustration. And make this time count.

So we're running our UNLOCK'D 2020 Composition Competition.

We want you to pick up an instrument, a pen and paper, or go to your computer and get writing some music. Tidy it up. Send it in.

Cash prizes and studio recording to sweeten the deal.

  • Any Style. Be Creative.
  • Any Instruments. Be Creative.

Entry Categories:

Original Song or Composition for Solo Instrument (notated work)

Original Duo, Trio, Small Group or Band (notated work)

Original Song / Sequenced Work / Soundscape (recorded work only)


Prizes for each Category:

  • 1st Prize AUD 500 + Studio Recording of your entry
  • 2nd Prize AUD 250
  • 3rd Prize AUD 100
  • Highly Commended Awards
  • Recording Prizes for Recorded-Only submissions

Category 1: Original Song or Composition for Solo Instrument

  • Notated work of 1-2 minutes
  • Can be longer. Judges will focus on first 1-2 minutes
  • Submit a notated score to be eligible for cash prizes
  • Optional: Submit an audio/MIDI recording of the work

Examples:

  • A song for voice with a piano or guitar accompaniment
  • A solo piano, guitar, vocal or instrumental work
  • A work for a solo instrument with a simple accompaniment

Category 2: Original Duo, Trio, Small Group or Band

  • Notated work of 1-2 minutes
  • Can be longer. Judges will focus on first 1-2 minutes
  • Submit a notated score to be eligible for cash prizes
  • Optional: Submit an audio/MIDI recording of the work

Examples:

  • Instrumental or vocal duet
  • A jazz combo
  • A contemporary band
  • A piece for piano and other instrument where both parts feature
  • A string trio or quartet
  • There are no restrictions on what instruments may be in a group

Category 3: Original Song / Sequenced Work / Soundscape:

  • Recorded work of 3-5 minutes
  • Can be longer. Judges will focus on first 1-3 minutes
  • Submit an audio/MIDI recording of your original work
  • Notated work not required

Examples:

  • An orchestrated "movie theme" styled song
  • An original song or other composition for solo, ensemble or band
  • An ambient soundscape
  • Electronic music
  • Any other sequenced or soundscape composition
