And there I was : string quartet / Andrew Batterham.
by Andrew Batterham (2014)
Out of stock
This work is the first movement of a three-movement string
quartet, called Urban Songs. This piece investigates the
reality of living in an urban environment. Being alone in a
crowd, continuous communication, the conquest and destruction of
nature - these are some of the issues explored in each movement,
with the outcome up to the listener. For many people the daily
allowances made to exist in these environments are a kind of
normality; and yet, there must have once been a time when
highways and concrete did not overcome the grass and hills that
were originally there.
While some people seek the security of crowds and social moments, others need solitude and the unique personal silence of being alone in a crowd. And There I Was… explores both, not only in musical ways but also in the changing performance relationships between members of the group.
The second movement, 'Streetlights And Lost Souls', is a soundscape representing a lonely streetscape at night, devoid of both the people who usually populate the street and the presence of nature, itself now a distant memory. The third movement, 'The Union', evokes the continuous bustling between spaces that is the modern commuter's daily existence, with each person's destiny relying on the clock, and nothing else;
millions of people working together as one.
