I'll tell you later / Tim Stevens, solo piano.
I'll tell you later is Tim Stevens' third solo piano album, and sets his own improvisations against pieces of written music he first encountered as a child growing up in the Anglican church. The hymn book has had a long-lasting influence on Stevens' musicianship, and relics of church harmony are frequently recognisable in his improvisations and compositions.
This album uses hymn tunes and other items of sacred music as a context for improvisation that is spontaneous but that seeks to reflect or to lead to material that has been written elsewhere.
Because Tim was a chorister at St Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne, he engaged in the performance of psalms, canticles and motets that have similarly stayed with him. All are represented to some degree on this album, which constitutes his most personal playing yet.
The culmination of this program is Bach's 'St Anne' fugue, presented in a piano transcription. An encore of sorts follows: Leslie Coward's 'Wandering the king's highway'.
