Three Friends In Winter adapts its title from a tradition in Asian painting of depicting pine, bamboo, and plum, the 'three friends of winter.' The central three movements of the disc are collected as a suite based very loosely on this idea. Preceding them at the disc's opening is 'July,' a very spare, quiet, and reflective movement that displays the band's superb control of sound and material; the album concludes with the title track, a Stevens original.
