A large-scale two movement work, Piano Concerto was commissioned by Australian-British pianist Rosemary Tuck and was composed in Sydney in 2021. The two movement shape is similar to my earlier Violin Concerto - with a slow first movement (Cantilena Ocean Sky: 'Expansive, tender and slow') and a fast moto perpetuo second movement (Canticle of the Birds: 'In constant flight - fast'). The work is dedicated 'In memoriam to Richard Meale' and draws on some of the sketches and ideas from his uncompleted Piano Concerto.
Instrumentation: Solo piano, 2 flutes, 2 oboes (2nd doubling cor anglais), B flat clarinet, bass clarinet in B flat, bassoon, contrabassoon, 4 French horns in F, 2 trumpets in C, 2 tenor trombones, bass trombone tuba, timpani, percussion (2 players), harp, strings.
Duration: 32 min.
Contents note: I. Cantilena Ocean Sky (16'10") -- II. Canticle of the Birds (15'50").
Dedication note: Dedicated to Richard Meale
Commission note: Commissioned by Rosemary Tuck.
- In the form/style of: Concertos
