Work Overview

This piece utilises developmental variation form. The opening theme is developed in Variation 1, then each succeeding variation is based on the last. This allows for the organic exploration of an idea across the whole sound spectrum of a pipe organ, with the Postlude unrelated to the Thema yet arrived at through a logical musical journey.

Written for organist and scientist Robin Batterham, the work was premiered by him at Ormond College Chapel, Melbourne, in 1995. Other performances include the Sydney Organ Competition and at St Patrick's Basilica Fremantle by Dominic Perissinotto, who also generously typeset the original score.
