Work Overview

Haratua is the last phase of the Māori lunar year, roughly corresponding to May. This short work, exploring the lyricism of the tenor trombone, is reminiscent of the stillness and solitude felt when Aotearoa New Zealand was in COVID lockdown over the same period in 2020. Haratua won first place in the SOUNZ Centre for NZ Music's 2020 Brass Composition Prize, in association with Brass Band Association of NZ (BBANZ). It was recorded by David Bremner and David Barnard by SOUNZ and featured the 2020 BBANZ Championships.
