Work Overview

I composed Bird Chants I and II in the late 1990s for Vanessa Sharman, who recorded them on her recital of my piano music for her Tall Poppies CD, entitled Bird Chants, in November 2009. Bird Chants III is similarly characterised by repetitious short, chirpy gestures and phrases and rushes of notes creating mosaic-like sound patterns in space with an overall intended feeling of stillness and tranquillity. I composed this third short example for Jack Barnes, as a small gesture of acknowledgement for his ready-willingness to perform new Tasmanian piano music. Bird Chants III may be performed alone or following the earlier two, to make a trilogy.
