Work
In Memory of Julian : guitar solo
Score
Library shelf no. 787.87/SEA 4 [Available for loan]
Work Overview
In my formative years, the guitarists I listened to prolifically
were John Williams, Julian Bream, Andres Segovia and Narcisso
Yepes. The only time I saw Julian perform live was at the
Adelaide Town Hall in 1983. He played the William Walton
Bagatelles, which I later learned he had commissioned. Out of the
hundreds of guitar performances I have witnessed, it was
outstanding. I would have loved to meet the man, because I think
we would have connected. Like me, he was a cricket tragic who
loved a tipple, and once said he would gladly trade some of his
musical talent to be able to bowl a decent "wrong un". I have
composed this piece in his memory and I have tried to reflect
Walton's rhythmic and harmonic ideas and Bream's use of tone
colour.
