Frank Millward completed a MA in music composition at the City University of New York in 1981, studying computer music composition with Charles Dodge. Moving to London, he took up the position of composer-in-residence with the Lumiere and Son Theatre Company, writing scores and musically directing a number of works. One of these works, Brightside, an electroacoustic experimental dance/theatre piece, won the Perrier Award at the Edinburgh Festival in 1986.

Returning to Australia, he freelanced as a musical director (keyboards), composer and producer. He has produced and/or composed for the Queensland Symphony, Melbourne Theatre Co, La Boite Theatre Co, TN Theatre Co, ABC TV, SBS TV, RooArt Records, EMI and Warner Chappell Publishing, as well as working with a number of music performers including Michael Hutchence, Ollie Olsen, Noiseworks and Grace Knight.

As a composer and teacher of sonic art, jazz, popular music and creative music technology, he has held positions at various universities while continuing to receive commissions for new works where he has written, arranged and/or performed on a number of documentary film scores for the ABC, BBC, Channel 4 and independent producers in Australia and the UK.

Since 1998 he has composed and musically directed a number of site-specific works for major UK festivals, including: Dining With Alice and The Perfect Day with Artichoke. This follows on from his highly innovative performance piece, Timelines for DJ and orchestra.

After a term as Professor of Music in the School of Fine Art at Kingston University London, he returned to Australia to take up the position of Professor and Head of the School of Creative Arts at the University of Newcastle.

Since 2017 he has been a freelance producer and composer developing a number of mixed-media projects including Visual Music Live - See what you hear - Hear what you see.
