Event Details

A concert of poetry and music to mark the Centenary of the distinguished poet Michael Thwaites, with international pianist Penelope Thwaites.

The program concludes with the premiere of a new Missa Brevis by Penelope Thwaites, commissioned by the Friends of St John’s with the St John’s Choir and visiting choristers. Soloists: Colin Milner (tenor) and Veronica Thwaites-Brown (mezzo soprano), conducted by Sheila Thompson.

MICHAEL THWAITES AO (1915-2005) is known as one of Australia’s most distinguished poets. He was the first Australian to be awarded the Kings Medal for Poetry as well as winning Oxford’s Newdigate Prize when a Rhodes Scholar.  His war poetry came out of his active service in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.  Subsequent poems delineate his strong feeling for Australia, its nature and its history, as well as expressing his humour and his faith.  Michael and his wife Honor were long-time parishioners of St John’s. Together they wrote the national hymn For Australia.

Featured non-Australian music: Bach, Schumann, Debussy, Scriabin, German
