Event Details

We think of the Industrial Revolution as a long-gone time, but in actual fact we're currently living through another one - not the Second, or Third, but the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Each one has been unimaginably consequential in how we both individually live our lives and collectively move forwards as a species. My recital brings together pieces that take a look at the cultural phenomena and products of the Industrial Revolutions. From the average commuter to wartime machinery, mass production factories to neoliberalism, these five works from Australian and American composers are an incredible musical snapshot of the modern industrial world as we know it - in all its harrowing glory. I've always wanted to play Rzewski's Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues since I came across it. With an opportunity to play the rarely-done two piano version with my teacher Tim Young, I've had so much fun curating a program around this work, focusing on themes of machinery and industrialisation. Although each piece is so unique (some are funny, some are terrifying), I’m most excited about premiering a new work from Lynden Bassett. I approached Lynden to write something for this program, and the result will be unforgettable – I mean, look at the title: Why Wait? Tomorrow Has Already Been Cremated in Hell...

Featured non-Australian music: Leo Ornstein, "Suicide in an Airplane"; Frederic Rzewski, "Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues"
