Ravel was honest enough to admit that he and Debussy owed more than they had ever acknowledged in public to Grieg’s melodic and harmonic art. The Australian Percy Grainger, who dedicated his many folk music settings ‘lovingly and reverently’ to Grieg, combined his fidelity to his sources with an exuberant imagination of superb technical assurance. A sheaf of his tuneful shorter works commemorates the 50th anniversary of Grainger’s death.
Featured non-Australian music: Grieg, Ravel, Wagner
