Event Details
In this first concert for 2018 on February 17th, The Metropolitan Orchestra (TMO) with Chief Conductor Sarah-Grace Williams will present a beautiful, thought-provoking evening to arouse thoughts, feelings and emotions. Including a premiere Australian work combined with iconic pieces by Sibelius and Dvorak, the audience will revel in the unique beauty of each inspiring work.
Sibelius’ “Swan of Tuonela” is immersed in ancient Finnish mythology taking the listener on a magical journey where a swan glides majestically on black mystical waters. We then move to the beautiful and desolate Australian outback in a world premiere Australian orchestral song cycle titled ‘Beauty’ in a work inspired by contemporary Australian cultural influences, places and relationships.
“I am very excited to be commencing TMO’s 2018 season, our tenth year of concerts, premiering a wonderful new Australian song cycle showcasing the composers performing in a combination rarely heard with orchestra – baritone voice with soprano sax. This fresh work coupled with Sibelius’ gorgeous ‘Swan of Tuonela’ and Dvorak’s incredible ninth symphony rounds out a perfect program to launch the year and set the tone for our other fabulous programs for 2018.”
The second half of the evening will take the audience to the ‘New World’ with Dvorak’s iconic ninth symphony. Regarded as his most popular symphony, and one of the most popular of all symphonies, this work accompanied Neil Armstrong during the Apollo 11 mission, the first Moon landing, in 1969.
