Matt Sheens: Cloud Appreciation Day, with special support by Mary Rapp
Weaving a little minimalist magic into his music, Downbeat award-winner Matt Sheens has made impressive progress after relocating to New- ork a few years ago. Two critically acclaimed albums have highlighted Matt’s ability as a composer and pianist with All About Jazz applauding his “melodic and rhythmic ideas championing narrative over virtuosity”. A recent finalist in the 2014 Freedman Jazz Fellowship, Matt returns to Australia to tour his latest release Cloud Appreciation Day, which draws on West African grooves and 20th Century poetry.
The album was made possible by the APRA/ AMCOS Professional Development Awards.
Support: Mary Rapp Mary combines cello, voice, brute strength, rock emotion and noisy catharsis into a musical amalgam that defies easy categorisation.
The SMH said: “Rapp had an instinct for being taciturn and pithy; for making the music gossamer light or adding phenomenal weight and vigour, using extraordinarily few notes”.
