Elias String Quartet; Musica Viva
The members of Britain’s Elias String Quartet bring together their diverse cultures, languages and musical interests to create a dramatic and satisfying whole. In this triumphant return tour of Australia they present two revered staples of the quartet repertoire alongside a highly anticipated world premiere from composer Matthew Hindson, inspired by the movement and energy of light.
The Quartet recently won the opportunity to work intensively on the entire Beethoven cycle. Cellist Marie Bitlloch says, ‘We're starting the cycles a year before we come to Australia. By then we'll have played half of all Beethoven's quartets! It’s going to be wonderful to play op 59 no 2 in Australia, having been immersed in his music.’
First violinist Sara Bitlloch rejoices in the chance to play one of Haydn’s best-loved masterpieces, op 77 no 2. ‘It's one that we played a long time ago, and we loved playing it. We’re relishing the opportunity of taking it back now that we feel a bit more experienced. It has this most extraordinary slow movement that starts almost like a walk, with just two instruments; and then other instruments gradually comment.’ Donald Grant expands: ‘So much of Haydn's music is incredibly folky, and so much of it should sound incredibly free and improvised…We feel a kind of new-found freedom and a sense of fun and exploration in the music.’
Join the ongoing journey of this magnificent young ensemble as it weaves the historical foundations of the genre into an assured brilliant future.
