A landmark event in the Australian music calendar, Freedman Jazz is a window into what's happening now in jazz. Future giants perform alongside jazz luminaries in this thrilling showcase event that decides the 2016 Freedman Jazz Fellow.
2016 finalists include drummer James McLean and pianists Joe O'Connor and Luke Sweeting. Each finalist will present a set of music to contend for the prestigious fellowship prize.
Freedman Jazz will also feature a special performance by multi-award winning Australian saxophonist and composer and 2003 Freedman Jazz Fellow Andrew Robson with Brett Hirst (bass) and Toby Hall (drums).
Past winners of the Freedman Jazz Fellowships are a Who's Who of Australian jazz. The fellowship has previously been awarded to guitarists Ben Hauptmann and James Muller, saxophonists Julien Wilson, Andrew Robson and Matt Keegan, pianists Andrea Keller, Matt McMahon, Aaron Choulai, Marc Hannaford and Tal Cohen, trumpeter Phil Slater, bassist Christopher Hale and vocalist Kristin Berardi.
The Jazz Fellowship is funded by the Freedman Foundation, managed by The Music Trust and administered by the Sydney Improvised Music Association. ABC Jazz is a proud media partner of Freedman Jazz.
