Sydney-based saxophonist and composer Jeremy Rose was awarded the 2009 Bell Award for Young Australian Jazz Artist of the Year, and has been co-leading successful emerging bands The Vampires, The Strides, Compass, as well as working with veteran Australian pianists Mike Nock and Judy Bailey.
Rose has travelled extensively over the past three years, including a six-month exchange to Oslo, Norway, a scholarship study trip to London, as well as regular visits to New York, Tokyo, and this year’s prestigious Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music. His time in Oslo in particular led to the Chiba project with two Norwegian musicians.
Featuring guitarist Kim Johannesen, bassist Adrian Myhr, both well known on the Norwegian jazz scene and Rose’s long-time Sydney-based collaborator Alex Masso on drums, Chiba was recorded at Musikkloftet Studios in Oslo after a week of intensive performances together.
Influenced by Bill Frisell and Wayne Shorter amongst others, Rose’s melodic compositions invite the players to a common meeting point between individual and group improvisation. Chiba has a contemporary jazz focus which allows the four musicians to explore their background of jazz and creative music. Here to release the record in Australia on Earshift Records, the Jeremy Rose Quartet will be making a SIMA debut tonight.
