Pianist Tony Gould is one of Australia’s most eminent jazz musicians : a member of the Bell Awards Hall Of Fame, and a recipient of Don Banks Fellowship, he received the Order of Australia in 2008, and in 2012 was appointed a Professor in the School of Music at Monash University. In recent years, he has taken great satisfaction from interpreting composed and improvised music with his partner, the gifted cellist Imogen Manins, whether as a duo, or in the company of other musicians such as Gianni Marinucci (trumpet, flugelhorn), who shares their passion for tonal beauty and melodic development.
Gould says, “Our music focuses on melody and interaction, and the pieces are chosen accordingly and with great care. We know the music individually, but like to wait until we come together in performance rather than rehearse the life out of it. That is, we think of musical improvisation as a spontaneous adventure and hope that audiences come along on the journey to see what happens. It is possible to be serious and have fun at the same time.”
