Event Details
Every Utrecht resident and visitor to the city has at some time heard the Dom Tower carillon. The mechanical bells sound every fifteen minutes, but on Friday and Saturday the carillon is also played by city carillonneur Malgosia Fiebig. The theme of the Saturday during Gaudeamus Muziekweek is new music.
Fiebig and Gaudeamus were so impressed by the short composition by the Australian composer Chris Williams that he was asked to add two extra sections to it. Composer Martijn Comes also turns out to be hugely fond of bronze bells and has already written several carillon concertos. Last November Comes opened our fellow festival Le Guess Who? with a piece for carillon, and now he has been commissioned by Gaudeamus to write a new work. The best spot from which to listen to the concert is the Buurkerkhof (the square behind the Speelklok Museum.)
