Event Details

Three composers explore musical and spiritual ideas of intensity and depth.
John Psathas was inspired by the great truths in the writings of a Buddhist guru to navigate slower passages of musical time.

Gillian Whitehead expresses the fragility rather than a celebration of peace through the peace goddess, Hineputehue and Maori traditional instruments.

Beethoven’s late work Opus 131 is regarded by many as his greatest and most spiritual string quartet.

Richard Nunns is a living authority on nga taonga puoro (Maori traditional musical instruments) and has been described as one of New Zealand’s most remarkable musicians. He will join the New Zealand String Quartet to play Gillian Karawe Whitehead's Hineputehue (“the woman of the sound of the gourd”) for string quartet and Taonga Puoro.

Featured non-Australian music: Psathas, Beethoven
