Event Details

Midnight comes and goes, the hours fly. And solitary still, I lie.

In Sappho’s Butterflies, pianist Stefan Cassomenos and soprano Judith Dodsworth bring to life two works by Melbourne composer Kevin March.

Catalogue des Papillons for solo piano revels in the unique spirit of twelve exotic butterflies. Cassomenos and Dodsworth then recreate their ABC ‘Into the Music’ performance of Mythweaver, a song cycle based on Greek lyric poet Sappho’s writing in which a woman’s nighttime yearnings for her lover take wing.

Catalogue des Papillons and Mythweaver are both world premieres.

Melbourne pianist, conductor and composer Stefan Cassomenos gives regular solo recitals throughout Australia, and has appeared as a soloist in Europe and Asia. He is well known for performances of chamber music and art song, and was recently awarded the 2012 Young Achievement Award by the Hellenic Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Versatile and unconventional soprano Judith Dodsworth is an accomplished performer of opera, oratorio, chamber music and art song. Increasingly in demand as an exponent of new music for her musicianship, vocal versatility and dramatic flair, Judith has performed, recorded and premiered numerous works throughout Australia and overseas. Her performance of Peter Maxwell Davies’ Miss Donnithorne’s Maggot with Syzygy Ensemble in last year’s Metropolis Festival was described by Limelight magazine as “positively mesmerising”.
