Kapture is a masterfully performed fusion of jazz and Indian classical musics - The Music Trust
Five of Australia’s leading jazz and Indian musicians present a moving musical tribute to South African freedom fighter—and Nelson Mandela’s cellmate—Ahmed Kathrada. The 12 compositions that make up Kapture—most written by Sandy Evans—explore a range of moods, from meditative to lyrical, energetic to dark. The vocal presence of Sarangan Sriranganathan extends this palate even further. In some pieces a narrative or theme is used as inspiration—on The Censors, Kathrada’s prisoner number is employed as a rhythmic base—while others are lyrical representations of an idea or event, or are more abstract musical interpretations of loss or hope.
The success of Kapture is testament to both the quality of the writing and the artistry and commitment of the musicians. The music was developed in collaboration with renowned choreographer Liz Lea. Don’t miss this extraordinary artistic event.
Opening Act: Tony Gorman and Bobby Singh (8pm)
A rare opportunity to hear triple ARIA award-winning artist Tony Gorman together with tabla-master Bobby Singh. Described by the Sydney Morning Herald as "intimate, like music being whispered in your ear, or like a confession from a best friend", this is a wonderful opportunity to hear this accomplished duo.
