PHIL SLATER QUINTET (9pm)

Phil Slater is a trumpeter and composer whose music draws upon his work with classical composers, including Peter Sculthorpe and Andrew Ford, and jazz practitioners, including Mike Nock, Scott Tinkler, Sandy Evans and Bernie McGann. This new project features premiere performances of new works composed for the quintet and reflects Phil’s longstanding position as a leading voice of contemporary jazz in Australia.

Phil is leader or co-leader of several groups, including Phil Slater Quartet and has composed and performed original music for Sydney Theatre Company, Belvoir St. Theatre and Legs On The Wall. He has also performed and recorded with artists such as Katie Noonan, Andrea Keller, Genevieve Lacey, Archie Roach, Missy Higgins, Lou Reed, Nigel Kennedy and the Australian Art Orchestra. Phil has been awarded the Freedman Fellowship, The National Jazz Award, the Bell Award for Australian Jazz Musician of the Year, the Bell Award for Best Australian Contemporary Jazz Ensemble (Phil Slater Quartet) and the Limelight Award for Outstanding Contribution to Contemporary Australian Jazz.

JAMES MCLEAN (8pm) 

2016 Freedman Jazz Fellow and first drummer to win the prestigious Freedman Award, James McLean works at the intersections of composed and improvised music.

In late 2015, James released his debut solo album Counter Clockwork – a suite of solo drum set music. For this performance, James will present a series of new solo works, demonstrating his virtuosity in movement informed improvising, multipart rhythmic structures, and extended techniques for the drum set.

Best known as a sideman in the jazz genre, James has recorded with a diverse range of artists. He co-leads numerous ensembles, including a duo
with expatriate composer/percussionist Phil Treloar.

This is the first concert of Freedman New Jazz series, with support from the Freedman Foundation and The Music Trust, in partnership with SIMA.
